CHAPTER 35

Mitch looked up at the knock on his hotel room door. Then he glanced at his watch and realized that he’d been flipping through pictures and descriptions for nearly two hours. He’d skipped going out for lunch with everyone else before, because his personal clock was all messed up right now and he knew better than to try to eat.

Best to let everything reset later. Maybe a walk around the block in a bit.

Except that someone was at his door.

And it wasn’t like there was a hole to see who it was.

Mitch locked his laptop and stood up, stretching and a little stiff.

More knocking.

“Hang on,” he called, causing them to stop.

He undid the deadbolt and braced his foot in case someone tried to rush him.

If nothing else, he had killers in the rooms on either side, who would be happy to take out some of their pent up energy and tension on somebody deciding to choose violence today.

Mitch opened the door just enough to see.

Huh.

Chelsea Vanlaere. Lieutenant, First Class. US Army. Most likely another killer like Joie or Romy.

She appeared to be alone. And had a bag of what smelled like takeout in one hand.

Mitch opened the door the rest of the way.

“Hiya,” he offered.

“Thought you might end up being hungry later,” she said, stepping into the room. “Didn’t think the rest would bother, so I grabbed you something.”

Mitch watched her set it on the dresser next to the television screen.

Nobody else in the hallway, so he closed the door. Leaned against it.

Obviously, she hadn’t just come to hand him food. She could have done that and walked on.

He paused to study the woman closer.

Medium height, so several centimeters shorter than Joie. And Romy. Broad in the shoulders and hips with a tucked-in waist. Not as much as Irene, but built in a similar manner. Above-average looks, in a way that Mitch had come to understand meant that a woman didn’t stand out at all in the kinds of places where male chauvinists ran things. Too beautiful and everyone would notice. Same for too plain.

Not exactly his style, but not a woman he’d kick out of bed for eating crackers, either.

She smiled as she watched him give her the once-over. They were all civilian now, dressed in jeans or pants and light shirts for this kind of weather.

“Something else I can help you with?” he asked in a flirting, leading manner.

That she was up to something was obvious. He wanted to know how obvious. Or how much trouble he might be in.

He didn’t feel like the new flavor that got passed around the office, but she had an appraising look in her eyes.

“You’re both Dearing’s and Pham’s ex, right?” she asked, going there. “Used to sleep with them, but not anymore?”

“When Kehoe burned Joie, she stopped dealing with everyone for a while,” he offered. “That kinda munged the whole relationship, but there’d already been issues because I was an outsider who wasn’t cleared to know hardly anything about the woman.
